What Garage Door Cable Repair Puts Right
Garage door cable repair replaces the two galvanized steel lift cables that run from the bottom bracket of the door to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft. A pair fitted in Round Rock costs $150 to $260 and takes 40 to 60 minutes, including re-leveling the door.

The bottom bracket loop is where cables die, and it sits two inches off the slab. Every time a driveway sheds water back under the door, that loop sits wet. Add the fine grit that blows in off a Central Texas summer and you have a slow grinding paste working on the galvanizing.

Can I keep using the door on one good cable?
No. One cable means the whole weight hangs off one side, which twists the door in the opening, pulls rollers toward the edge of the track and loads the bottom bracket in a direction it was never designed for. A single trip up and down can turn a $200 repair into a bent section.
Why replace both when only one snapped?
Because they were fitted the same day and have wound and unwound the same number of times. The one that held is a few hundred cycles behind its twin. Fitting a new pair also lets us set both drums to identical tension, which is what keeps the door level.
It unspooled rather than snapping. Does that cost less?
Sometimes. If the cable is undamaged and the drum and set screws are sound, re-spooling and re-tensioning is the lower end of the range. We still inspect the full length, because a cable that jumped usually did so for a reason, and slack from a tired spring is the commonest one.
How long do lift cables normally last?
Ten to fifteen years, and they rarely fail without warning. They give up a strand at a time, starting at the loop around the bottom bracket where grit and water collect. That is why a torch and two minutes twice a year is worth so much.
Is a frayed cable urgent even if the door still works?
